Profile: Since the late 90’s, action movies have been trending more towards CGI laden spectacles. Granted, all movies at this point are subject to some amount of CGI, even on the smallest scale, but the day of the muscle bound action star has waned. Instead we are inundated with superhero movies and epic fantasies. (Read: Iron Man, Spider-Man, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, 300, Avatar…) The days of the tough guy, in a tough spot, using pure brute force, are seemingly gone. There have been some blips on the radar: the Bourne series, the most recent Rambo, Casino Royale (which could be argued down), and most everything that Jason Statham has put out. Statham hearkens back to the days of testosterone fueled ass-kicking, perhaps that’s why he’s so popular, and perhaps that’s why he fits in Stallone’s recent parade of action stars, The Expendables (2010). He is carrying on the tradition pioneered by the likes of Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Stallone. (more…)

"Only an idiot would do this job."

This past weekend The Expendables took number one at the box office, blowing both Michael Cera¬†and Julia Roberts’ puny films away in a blast of pure testosterone. It seems like this was the summer action movie that audiences had been waiting for, especially after the somewhat lackluster A-Team reimagining and a slew of other half-hearted remakes and sequels. So is it worth it? Will it satisfy your craving for blood, sweat, and explosions? (more…)

Over the Top: Profiles in Action Movie History

Leaving my local multiplex the other night after seeing Dinner for Schmucks, review found here, I saw an almost life-size display for Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming cavalcade of action stars, The Expendables.  It got me thinking back to simpler times when my friends and I would go down to the video store and rent the bloodiest, most shootinest action flicks we could find.  Growing up in the 80s and 90s was the prime time for watching the peaking action careers of Willis, Schwarzenegger, JCVD, Stallone and many others.  Ahh, the blood and carnage take me right back.  So due to my undying love for a genre that is rife with plot inconsistencies, bad acting and things blowing up for no better reason than that they should, I will be profiling some of film’s best action stars.  I will chart their highs and lows, where they came from, where they are now, and why we love them so much.  So strap yourself in and don’t forget, “If it bleeds, we can kill it.”

For the first installment I’ll be profiling one of the big three, Arnold Schwarzenegger. (more…)
