Don’t listen to the marketing campaign – Catfish isn’t the movie they want you to think it is. The posters ominously warn you to not “let anyone tell you what it is,” and seem to suggest some sort of thriller or horror flick. It’s unfortunate that they resort to making you play guessing games in order to see this film. With a story that’s driven primarily by events occurring on the internet, and a plot that constantly has you questioning the truth from those in front of and behind the camera, Catfish captures life in 2010 in a way that few other movies do. I’ll try to avoid giving away any of the specifics in this review, but it’s impossible to discuss this film without changing the way you’ll perceive it. If you want to go in with no preconceptions at all, stop reading now. Otherwise, read on. (more…)

Just a heads up to readers in the NYC metropolitan area: there are multiple festivals showing at Symphony Space on the upper west side.  For those unfamiliar with Symphony Space, it hosts artistic events in the music, literature, dance, theater and film fields.  Their programs cater to all kinds of people, be you high art connoisseur or layman there is something for you.  Also they run programs designed for the whole family including flicks that are youth appropriate, kid-oriented bands and conversations with authors of children’s literature.  I highly recommend this place to everyone. “Snapshot, then, was originally a hunting term.”

One Hour Photo, written and directed by Mark Romanek, a story about a lonely photo-developer who grows attached to a family who have developed their photos with him over many years. As his obsession grows stronger, things take a turn for the worse when he discovers a family secret. Starring Robin Williams as ‘Sy’ Parrish, we see the destruction that this secret creates. It is an impressive film, that provides us with many directions to look at, and most importantly, is a thoroughly entertaining 90minutes. (more…)

Trailer Review:
[Reviewed by: Alex Miller]

So apparently all you have to do is make a raunchy youtube style video 90mins long, and Will Ferrell/Adam McKay will drop by and Produce it. At least that’s what this trailer leads me to believe. This looks like Superbad mixed with Borat. It makes a big deal about things that aren’t a big deal (Superbad) and it acts like it’s a documentary when everything seems pretty staged (Borat). I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole damn thing were scripted, which is fine, but then why give it this unscripted feel? It just seems fake. It could also be easily mistaken for another episode of MTV’s True Life: I’m a Virgin (which is also scripted). Actually the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 was the line “I am going to do to your virginity, what Alfred Hitchcock did to birds.” Now that’s funny. The rest of it, not so much. I’m not ruling out watching this movie at some point but the chances, ironically like its production values, don’t look good. But watch it and make up your own mind. Let us know what you think in the comments!

On a total side note I’ve made all the youtube embeds on the site bigger so enjoy!
