With this look back at what many consider to be M. Night Shymalan’s finest work, we welcome brand new contributor Justin Wagner!

The noughties; the biggest decade in superhero movie blockbuster history.  While the likes of Sam Raimi and Christopher Nolan were directing rehashes of old comic book favorites, M. Night Shyamalan was creating a new “superhero”.  One who is unlike Tony Stark or Bruce Wayne in that the protagonist David Dunn (Bruce Willis) is not rich, he is not a top scientist, nor does he have a line of women chasing after him.  David Dunn is a just a normal guy; normal except for the fact that he has never been sick.  David realizes this after he is the only survivor in a train wreck killing 131 passengers.  He returns home unscathed to his wife Audrey Dunn (Robin Wright Penn), with whom he is currently going through a dissolving marriage, and his child Joseph Dunn (Spencer Treat Clark).  The train wreck is brought to his attention by art gallery owner Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) who has a romanticism for the characters portrayed in comic books. At this point, David Dunn looks like the perfect candidate for Elijah’s long sought after real life superhero. (more…)
