In this new series of articles I hope to showcase fun movie-related applications for iPhone/Droid/PC/MAC.  Featured apps can be a movie-themed game, utility, or novelty. Today’s app is a fun little replica of the DeLorean time circuit from Back to the Future. How close it comes to functioning like the one in the movie may surprise you!

App: DeLoraen Time Circuit (likely misspelled on purpose for copyright reasons)

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone and iPod touch. Requires iOS 4.1 or later.

Cost: $0.99

Version Tested: 3.1

Description: A novelty replica of the DeLorean time circuit from Back to the Future 1-3. It also doubles as an alarm clock.

Pros: It looks and sounds just like the one in the movie. Fans will definitely get a kick out of all of the authentic sound effects. The alarm clock functionality is a cool idea, although I doubt I would actually use it for that. The coolest thing, however, is an optional (and also dangerous), “88MPH Time Travel Simulation” Option.  This particular setting is only available on the iPhone as it uses its GPS to detect when you have reached 88MPH.  It then plays some cool animations and sound effects, and then the circuit data reflects that you have traveled to your destination time. Don’t try this at home kids.

Cons: The keypad (while very authentic looking) is pretty close to non-functional.  It is beyond frustrating to try to key in your destination date.  It seems like this would be an easy thing to get right but apparently not.  They added an additional way to key it in (touch above the number to go up, or below to go down) which works much better but is impractical when trying to enter the year.  If the year says 2076 and I want to go to 1776 I’ve got to press below the number 300 times.

Summary: Although hardcore fans of the movie will get their $0.99 worth of fun, it is just too hard to recommend it until they fix the serious keypad issues.
